West & Schopfer Lead Softball To 7-0 Series Opening Win Over Georgetown

Lily West drove in a career-high five runs in the victory.
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Junior Lily West recorded three hits and drove in a career-high five run while senior Kenzie Schopfer tossed a complete-game shutout as the Creighton softball team soared to a 7-0 victory over Georgetown in the series opener on Friday afternoon at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy in Washington, D.C.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 13-19 on the year and to 3-7 in BIG EAST play, while the Hoyas fell to 8-21 overall and 0-13 in league action.
Creighton pounded out 12 hits in the contest, led by a season-high three hits and a career-high five RBI from West, while sophomore's Ashten Pierson and Sydney Potter each collected a pair of base knocks. Schopfer also impressed in the circle, firing a complete-game shutout for her first win of the season.
Georgetown was led offensively by Emily Strittmatter with a pair of hits, while Kalya Dunn suffered the loss, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks in 4.0 innings of work.
Creighton came out swinging from the jump as Pierson laced a single to left and stole second, before West gave the Bluejays a 1-0 lead with an RBI single through the right side of the infield.
After three scoreless innings, the Bluejay bats went back to work in the top half of the fifth. Senior Sydra Seville opened the frame with a double into the left center field gap and Pierson drew a walk before West lined a two-run single down the right field line to collect her third RBI of the game. One out later, Potter blasted her team-leading seventh home run over the center field wall to extend the Bluejays lead out to 5-0.
Creighton would tack on two addition runs in the top of the sixth to open up a 7-0 advantage. Sophomore Lynn Davis led off the inning with a single to right center, before West belted her first home run of the season to left center to secure the Bluejay victory.
The Bluejays and Hoyas will continue their three-game series on Saturday, April 5 at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy at 10 a.m. Central.
