Men's Golf Starts Fourth After 18 Holes at BIG EAST Championship

OKATIE, S.C. -- Creighton stands in fourth place after the first 18 holes of the BIG EAST Men's Golf Championships, Presented by JEEP. The Bluejays were seeded ninth in the 10-team field entering the day but shot an even-par 288 to open the 54-hole event, which matched its best opening-round score since joining the BIG EAST a dozen years ago.
Sophomore Brock Kuhlman and junior Grant Feldman are both tied for sixth place after matching 70's on day one. Kuhlman parlayed birdies on No. 8, No. 9 and No. 14 and tied his best round as a Bluejay with his 70. Feldman authored his 14th round of par or better this season with a loop that included an eagle on No. 12 and a birdie on No. 4.
Freshman Gavin Gerch's BIG EAST Championship debut started with back-to-back birdies and finished with a 73 that has him tied for 17th place. Fellow freshman Henry Kuehne also birdied No. 2 in a round of 75 that tied him for 31st.
Rounding out the Bluejay line-up was sophomore Owen Price, who shot a 78 in a round that featured a team-high four birdies. He's in a tie for 45th place.
Butler and the nation's No. 46-ranked team, Marquette share the lead in the team standings with a 3-under 285. The rest of the team standings are Xavier (287), Creighton (288), Connecticut (289), Georgetown (290), Seton Hall (292), Villanova (294), DePaul (297) and St. John's (301).
The individual lead belongs to Marquette's Mason Schmidtke after a 5-under 67 that included a tourney-best seven birdies, one shot better than Georgetown's Barnes Blake and Butler's Derek Tabor. Sixteen of the 50 players in the field are at par or better after 18 holes..
The tournament is being played at Callawassie Island Golf Club, a Par 72 layout that measures 6,911 yards.
Play resumes on Sunday at 7 a.m. Central, with Creighton's first player (Price) slated to tee off at 8:30 a.m. Central.
