MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Creighton women's tennis team soared out to the early lead and held on to outlast Marquette, 4-3, for its first win of the season in the BIG EAST opener on Friday afternoon at the Sprovieri Tennis Complex in Milwaukee, Wis.
The Bluejays improved to 1-1 on the season and 1-0 in BIG EAST play with its fourth consecutive victory over Marquette. The Golden Eagles, however, fell to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in league action.
"This was a gritty win," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Marquette is improving and played very hard today. Our group has had a long week of dealing with a variety of issues/illnesses, so I was very proud of them for giving it all they had today."
Creighton got things started on the right foot, claiming the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions. Senior Ana Paula Martinez and sophomore Sophie Schwartz combined for a 6-0 victory at the top doubles spot, while freshmen Teresa Tran and Mithila Dixit picked up for their first doubles win of the season with a 6-1 victory on the No. 3 doubles court.
Leading 1-0 heading into singles play, the Bluejays immediately claimed a 2-0 lead following a 6-1, 6-4 straight sets win by Schwartz at the top single position.
Marquette answered with a pair of three set wins on the No. 3 and No. 4 singles courts to level the match at 2-2.
Martinez answered quickly with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 three-set victory over Emma Davis at the No. 2 spot to regain a 3-2 Bluejay advantage, before sophomore Alem Cote clinched the match with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 three-set win over Marquette's Luciana Mendoza on the No. 5 singles court.
Although the match was already in hand, Marquette's Elena Duva picked up a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) win on the No. 6 singles court to cut the margin to 4-3.
Creighton returns to the court on Saturday afternoon for another BIG EAST Conference matchup against DePaul in the Windy City. First serve between the Bluejays and Blue Demons is set for 4:45 p.m.
