Milwaukee, Wis. -- A tough third quarter turned a 29-25 battle into a tough loss for Creighton Women's Basketball as the Bluejays fell 67-49 at Marquette on Thursday, January 8. The loss moved Creighton to 7-9 overall and 3-4 in BIG EAST contests, while Marquette climbed to 11-5 overall and 5-2 in conference contests.
A slow start saw Creighton fall back 8-0 in the opening moments, but the Bluejays battled back with buckets from Kennedy Townsend and Kendall McGee. The quarter closed with each squad trading treys, the Bluejays' coming from McGee to close the first quarter with Creighton trailing 11-7.
Creighton started the second quarter with consecutive baskets from Grace Boffeli and a trifecta by Townsend gave CU its first lead of the game 12-11 (7:19). After a Marquette jumped in the paint, McGee answered with a jumper off glass near the end of the shot clock. The Golden Eagles, however, scored eight of the next 11 to reclaim control and held a 29-25 advantage at the half.
Things got away from Creighton in the third as Marquette outscored the Bluejays 15-2 to hold a 44-26 edge as the game moved to the final frame.
McGee led the Bluejays with 14 points, while Marquette saw four players finish in double digits. Olivia Porter led the game with 23 points, while Skylar Forbes delivered 12 points and 10 rebounds. Both Halle Vice and Jaidynn Mason each finished with 10 points.
The Bluejays return to the court on Sunday, January 11 as Creighton hosts #1 UConn in the Bluejays' annual Pink Out Game. The contest will be played in the CHI Health Center with an expected tip at 1:07 p.m. on truTV.
