Olivia Duray nets fastest goal in program history 30 seconds in.
OMAHA, Neb. – Junior Morgan Paley snared a career-high seven saves, including a game-winning save on a penalty kick in the 79th minute as the Creighton Women's Soccer team captured its first BIG EAST victory with a 2-1 win over Butler on Saturday afternoon.
The win marked Creighton's first win over Butler since 1993 as the Bluejays improved to 5-5-3 on the year and 1-2-2 in BIG EAST play. Butler, meanwhile, had their eight-match unbeaten streak come to an end as they dropped to 6-3-4 overall and 1-1-3 in league action.
It took a mere 30 seconds for the Bluejays to claim a 1-0 lead as Duray netted one of the fastest goals by a Bluejay in program history. Pressing up, Duray intercepted a sluggish pass along the backline and hammered home her fourth goal of the year to give the Jays a 1-0 lead. Duray's goal just 30 seconds in was the fastest goal by a Bluejay since Lulu Quigley converted a penalty kick just 21 seconds into a contest against Western Illinois on Oct. 28, 2001.
Butler, however, would answer less than six minutes later as Chloe Brecht headed in her BIG EAST-leading seventh goal of the season off a corner kick insertion from Riley Grumm to level the match at 1-1.
The Bluejays looked to have taken a 2-1 lead right before the break in the 45th minute as freshman Gabby Wagenfuhr finished off a series of passes from Kassey Dzenis and Kennedy Moore, but after review, the goal was call off as CU was whistled for offsides.
Locked in a 1-1 battle with less than 20 minutes remaining, Creighton took advantage of a Butler miscue as junior Macy Felton netted the first goal of her Bluejay career. Set in motion by a foul on Butler, Felton lofted the free kick to into the box from 45-yards out, where it bounced over the Butler goalkeeper and into the back of the net to give the Jays a 2-1 advantage.
Butler would not go away quietly as they increased their offensive pressure down the stretch in search of an equalizer. The Bulldogs would get their chance in the 79th minutes as Lola Pepper drew a foul in the box, resulting in a Butler penalty kick and a stretch red card to Bluejay defender Olivia Sides. Faced with her toughest test of the day, Paley stepped up and made an incredible diving save at the right post on the PK attempt from Grumm to preserve the Bluejays 2-1 lead.
Paley would be tested with a pair of late chances from Butler in the final 10 minutes but smothered every opportunity to claim her fourth win of the season in goal.
Butler closed the match with a 13-9 advantage in shots and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks, while Paley collected a career-high seven saves and her second PK save of the season in the victory.
Creighton will have a week off before returning to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 12 p.m. CT in Cincinnati, Ohio against Xavier.
