OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's tennis team picked up their sixth consecutive win, completing a 7-0 sweep of Western Illinois on Saturday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 7-2 on the year, while the Leathernecks fell to 2-8 overall.
"We had a good team effort today," said head coach Tom Lilly. "WIU has talent and has played a lot of close matches against good teams, so we knew we had to be focused and compete hard. It was a really good win today. We will need to rest up to play a strong Omaha team that has been playing great tomorrow."
CU soared out to an early lead, capturing the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. Freshmen Teresa Tran and Mithila Dixit cruised to a 6-0 victory on the No. 2 doubles court, before Sophie Schwartz and Alem Cote clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win on the No. 3 doubles court.
The Jays continued their dominance in singles play, capturing the victory with straight set wins on five of the six singles court.
Cote got the Bluejays started with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at the No. 5 singles position, moments before senior Annika Elvestrom claimed a 6-0, 6-2 straight sets win on the No. 4 singles court to give the Jays a 3-0 lead.
Dixit then clinched the overall dual with an identical 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 2 singles court. Schwartz followed with a 6-3, 6-0 straight sets win at the top singles court, before Tran rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat Chloe Routier, 2-6, 6-3, 10-4 on the No. 3singles court. Freshman Livia Rodrigues Daud then picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win on the No. 6 singles court to secure 7-0 sweep.
