FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Colorado State raced out to a 7-2 lead and held off a late Bluejay rally as the Creighton softball team dropped a 7-5 decision to the Rams on Sunday morning in the finale of the Colorado Classic in Fort Collins, Colo.
The Bluejays fell to 6-14 with the loss, while the Rams improved to 8-10 overall.
Colorado State struck first in the home half of the second as Abby Edwards laced an RBI single through the left side of the infield to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
Creighton answered in the top of the third when senior Erika Perez blasted her third home run of the season to level the contest at 1-1.
CSU would regain the lead in the next half inning on a solo shot from Kyra Smith, only to see Creighton tie it up once again in the fourth on a homer from junior Kaelan Schultz.
Knotted at 2-2 heading to the bottom of the fourth, the Rams seized control with a four-run frame to open up a 6-2 advantage. CSU used a pair of single from Allyson Moody and Jac Smith, as well as a walk to Jailey Wilson to load the bases, before a two-run double from Smith gave the Rams a 4-2 lead. Madi Eslinger immediately followed it up with a two-run double of her own to push the advantage to 6-4.
The Rams would then tack on an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI single from Moody to make the score 7-2.
The Bluejays, however, wouldn't go down quickly as they scored three runs on four hits in the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore Kenzie Nakasawa got the rally started with a pinch-hit single to right, before a single from Avery Barnard put runners on first and second with no outs. Zoey Greenwood then reached on a CSU error to load the bases for Lily West, who lined a two-run single up the middle to cut the deficit to 7-4. The Jays would then load the bases once again on a single from Schultz before Tara Vandewater delivered a sacrifice fly to right to make the score 7-5.
Down to their final three outs, the Jays put runners on first and second with singles from Karina Trevino and West, only to see Colorado State's Andrea Jaskowiak induced a groundball to close out the 7-5 victory.
Freshman Audrey Gilman (4-6) took the loss in the circle, while West and Schultz paced the Jays with two hits apiece.
Creighton returns to action on Friday, March 6 at 1 p.m. when they open up BIG EAST play with a three-game series at Seton Hall.
