The win lifted the Bluejays to 7-14 on the year and 1-0 in BIG EAST play, while improving to 7-5 in BIG EAST openers. Seton Hall, meanwhile, fell to 6-8 overall and 0-1 in league action with the loss.
West led the way going 5-for-6 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored, surpassing 200 career hits and 100 career RBI in the victory. West became just the 11th Bluejay in program history to record 200 career hits and moved into a tie with Ellen Homan (2011-14) and Wendy Moon (1991-94) for sixth on Creighton's career hits list with 203 hits. In addition, West became just the 13th player in school history to record 100 career RBI.
Perez meanwhile fell a home run shy of the cycle, adding four hits and a career-high seven RBI, while freshmen Zoey Greenwood and Keegan Mayhue each collected three hits in the contest. CU finished the game with another school record tying 22 hits and scored 20 runs for the second time this season. Junior Brooklyn Patchen claimed her third win of the season in the circle, allowing five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.
Creighton scored early and often, striking first on an RBI single to left from Mayhue in the top of the first inning. Tara Vandewater followed with a walk before an RBI single from Perez gave the Jays a 2-0 lead. Seton Hall countered with a five-run first to take a 5-2 advantage.
Creighton responded quickly, seizing control with seven runs on seven hits in top of the second. Ashten Pierson led off the frame with a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error, before coming in to score on an RBI single from Avery Barnard. One out later, West delivered an RBI double into the left center field gap to cut the deficit to 5-4. The Bluejays would then regain the lead two batters later as Vandewater lined a two-run single up the middle to push the Jays out in front 6-5. Perez kept things rolling with a two-run triple, her third triple of the season, down the right field line before an RBI triple from Pierson extended the Jays lead out to 9-5.
The Bluejays would tack on four runs in the third as Mayhue delivered a bases clearing double and Perez followed with an infield RBI single to give CU a 13-5 edge, only to see SHU answered with an RBI single from Sophia DeMarco in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Jays lead down to 13-6.
Three scoreless frames later, Creighton added seven additional runs in the top of the seventh to surge out in front, 20-6. Nine different Bluejays reached base in the frame with Perez, Barnard and West all recording an RBI base hit.
Seton Hall would close the game with four runs on three hits and two Bluejay errors in the bottom half of the seventh to cut the deficit to 20-10, but it was enough as the Bluejays ran away with the victory.
The Bluejays and Pirates will square off again on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT
