SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Creighton softball team completed its third consecutive BIG EAST regular season sweep dating back to last season, recording a 9-7 win at Seton Hall on Sunday afternoon.
The win, Creighton's program record ninth straight BIG EAST regular season win, pushes the Bluejays to 9-14 on the season and 3-0 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall dropped to 6-10 overall and 0-3 in league action.
All knotted up at 6-6 entering the seventh inning, Creighton used a leadoff single from Ashten Pierson and a sac bunt from Avery Barnard to put a runner in scoring position. Following a flyout to center that moved Pierson to third, the Jays took advantage of a fielding error on the Pirates second baseman to take a 7-6 lead. CU would tack on two insurance runs on RBI singles from Keegan Mayhue and Tara Vandewater to push the advantage out to 9-7.
The Pirates closed within one on an RBI single from Andrea Perez in the bottom of the frame, but it wasn't enough as Ava Drehs closed out the victory for the Bluejays.
Seton Hall stuck first, taking advantage of a Bluejay miscue and recorded three hits in the bottom of the first inning to grab an early 2-0 lead. Angelina Benitez led off the frame with a single down the left field line, which got away from Greenwood in left, allowing Benitez to reach third. Following a flyout from Katey Brennan, Sophia DeMarco lined an RBI single into the left centerfield gap to put the Pirates on the scoreboard. Naya Martinez and Erin Howard followed with a walk and a single to load the bases for Carolina Hobbes, who delivered a sacrifice fly to deep center to give the Pirates a 2-0 edge.
The Bluejays answered right back with three runs in the top of the second to snag a 3-2 lead. Kaelan Schultz and Vandewater got the Bluejays started with a walk and single to put runners on first and second with one away. Senior Erika Perez then launched her team-high tying fourth home run of the season to put the Jays out in front 3-2.
Creighton tacked on three addition runs in the top of the fourth when Schultz and Mayhue drew back-to-back walks before Ella Dalton blasted a three-run home run to right to build a 6-2 lead for the Bluejays.
Seton Hall immediately countered with three runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth to knot things up at 6-6. The Pirates loaded the bases with a single from Christina Ginez, a double from Perez and an infield single from Benitez before a sacrifice fly from Brennan and a two-run single from DeMarco to cut the deficit to 6-5. SHU then used a Bluejay error, a hit batter and a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third with one out, before an RBI fielder's choice from Perez leveled things up at 6-6 in the fifth and set the tone for a dramatic finish.
Drehs tossed 3.0 innings of one-run ball to pick the win in the circle, while Vandewater, Perez and Pierson led the way offensively with a pair of hits.
Creighton will return to action on Tuesday, March 10 when they travel south down I-29 to battle Kansas City in a doubleheader. Game one between the Bluejays and Roos is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Kansas City.
