CAYCE, S.C. – Senior Ana Paula Martinez and sophomore Sophie Schwartz clinched a hard-fought doubles point to give the Bluejays all the momentum as the seventh-seed Creighton Women's Tennis team defeated 10th seeded Butler, 4-1, on Thursday morning in the opening round of the BIG EAST Tournament at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center in Cayce, S.C.
With the win, Creighton (14-6) advances to play second-seeded DePaul in Friday's quarterfinal round, which is slated to start at 12 p.m. Central. Butler ended its season with a 5-18 overall record.
"We knew that Butler was going to be a tough match and that we would need to handle difficult situations," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Even if we weren't playing our best all the time, the girls were competing and handled the pressure well."
Creighton got Thursday's match started on the right foot by earning hard-fought wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions to take the first point of the match. Senior Annika Elvestrom and sophomore Alem Cote combined for a 6-3 victory on the No. 2 doubles court to give the Jays the early advantage, only to see Butler's Lauren Cook and Jordan Schildcrout claim a 6-4 win on the No. 3 doubles court to level this up at one match apiece.
With all eyes locked on the top doubles court, Martinez and Schwartz rallied from behind to clinch the doubles point and give the Jays a 1-0 lead with a 7-6 (7-0) tie-breaking win over Butler's Chase Metcalf and Brooke Arington.
Creighton carried all of that momentum into singles play, earning straight set victories at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions to clinch the 4-1 win over Butler.
Arington put the Bulldogs on the board, recording their lone point of the afternoon with a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 2 singles spot to level the contest at 1-1. CU's Livia Rodrigues Daud, however, answered with a 6-3, 6-2 straight sets victory of her own at the No. 6 singles position to regain a 2-1 lead for the Bluejays.
Elvestrom would then extend the lead to 3-1 with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 straight sets triumph on the No. 4 singles court, before Cote captured a 7-5, 6-2 straight sets victory at the No. 5 singles slot to clinch the overall dual for the Bluejays.
