LINCOLN, Neb. and WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Anika Nettekoven and Jake Ziebarth both set school records in the middle distances and Creighton teammates Gabe Hamilton and Logan Piper finished 1-2 in the 400 hurdles in different meets on Thursday and Friday. Nettekoven and Ziebarth competed at the Wake Forest Invitational, while Hamilton and Piper topped their competition at the Big Red Classic on Friday in Lincoln.
Nettekoven beat her previous school record in the 800 by more than a second, lowering her time from 2:11.58 down to 2:10.50. The Appleton, Wis., native was 27th of 82 runners in the 800 and 28th of 81 in the 1,500, where she clocked a 4:31.80. Nettekoven was fourth of 13 competitors in her heat.
Ziebarth destroyed his school record in the 1,500, dropping his mark from 3:46.74 to 3:45.18. Ziebarth was fifth in his talented heat, which put him eighth among the 87 competitors. The Barrington, Ill., native won his heat and placed fifth of 62 participants overall in the 800, clocking a time of 1:50.18.
Both middle distance stars performed at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., and turned in times good enough to qualify to run against top-flight competition on the famed blue oval at the Drake Relays next weekend.
"We had a great weekend out East at the Wake Forrest Invite with two school records and three personal bests," said assistant coach Matthew Fayers. "This was a a race we had been targeting and wanted to maximize our opportunity by doubling both athletes in the 800 and the 1500  Anika and Jake both won their sections of the 800 and competed really well, beating some talented runners from the ACC, Big Ten and SEC.  Doubling back was on tired legs is tough, but they both responded well with fast times for this time in the season!"
Hamilton and Piper were the lone Bluejays to compete in the Big Red Classic in Lincoln, and the duo finished first and second in the four-person race of the 400 hurdles. Hamilton won the race with a time of 54.73 in the 400 hurdles, just ahead of teammate Logan Piper's (54.82).
"We only had a few athletes taking the track this weekend with Jake and Anika heading to Wake Forest and Gabe and Logan at Nebraska," said head coach Chris Gannon. "All four ran incredibly well, five races between the four of them and we won three of the five heats. Jake improved his school record in the 1500 and Anika reset hers in the 800, while at Wake. Back here Logan and Gabe took on pretty tough conditions at Nebraska with 25+ mph wind, put up great times, and went first and second. Gabe technically set the facility record, with it being only the second meet at the new stadium."
Creighton heads to Iowa for a pair of meets next week. A few Jays will head to the Drake Relays in Des Moines on April 23-25, while the bulk of the team will head to Indianola for the Kip Janvrin Open on Thursday and Friday.
