Softball Closes Regular Season with 9-3 Win Over DePaul

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton Softball team closed out the regular season with a 9-3 win over DePaul to cap off the Bluejays sixth BIG EAST series win of the season on Sunday afternoon at the Creighton Softball Stadium.
The Bluejays finished the regular season with a 29-25 overall record and a 17-7 mark in the BIG EAST, while the Blue Demons ended their season with a 20-30 record and an 8-16 mark in league play. Creighton's 17 BIG EAST wins this season are its most in a BIG EAST season since joining the league prior to the 2014 season.
Creighton took charge early with three runs on five hits in the bottom half of the first inning. For the second straight day, junior Kaelan Schultz opened the game with a leadoff double and advanced to third on a single from senior Lily West. Schultz would then come in to score the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly from freshman Keegan Mayhue before West scored on an RBI double into the left centerfield gap from Zoey Greenwood to give the Jays a 2-0 lead. Senior Erika Perez followed with an RBI single through the right side to push the Bluejays advantage to 3-0.
DePaul answered right back in the top of the second using back-to-back singles from Bibianna Rodriguez and Katie Borges, as well as a walk to Morgan Rogers before cut the deficit to 3-2 on a two-run single down the left field line from Jolie Adams.
The Bluejays, however, responded with a pair of RBI singles from sophomore Tara Vandewater and West to extend the Jays lead to 5-2 in the home half of the second inning.
CU would then tack on two runs in the bottom of the third when senior Ella Dalton lasered her second home run of the season over the right field wall to give the Bluejays a 7-2 lead.
DePaul pushed across its final run of the contest in the sixth with a pinch-hit sacrifice fly from Addi Burdick, before the Jays added an RBI double from Mayhue and an RBI single from junior Avery Barnard to close out the 9-3 victory.
Sophomore Landrie Harris picked up the win (5-6) for the Bluejays, after tossing 4.1 innings of one-run ball. Creighton racked up 13 hits in the contest, led by two hits apiece from West, Greenwood, Ashten Pierson and Dalton.
Creighton will be back in action on Thursday, May 7 at 3 p.m. CT in Rosemont, Ill. as the Bluejays take on second-seeded UConn in the opening round of the BIG EAST Tournament.
