Originally from South Kent, Connecticut, Merritt learned to row at Kent School, one of the oldest and most successful rowing schools on the East Coast.
While earning his bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science at the University of Delaware, he continued rowing for the university and local clubs. He has competed internationally, served as a volunteer official at the Head of the Charles Regatta, and rowed with the Omaha Rowing Association throughout the Great Plains and Midwest.
