Baseball Returns Atop BIG EAST with 6-5 Win at St. John's

The victory pushed Creighton to 26-19 on the season and 11-4 in BIG EAST action, while St. John's fell to 25-21 overall and 11-4 in conference play.
The Bluejays jumped out to a 4-0 early in the contest with single runs in the first and third innings as well as two in the fourth.
Connor Capece gave Creighton a 1-0 lead in the opening frame with an RBI single to right-center, driving in Rocco Gump from third. In the third it was Nate McHugh driving an RBI double to right-center to plate Isaac Wachsmann. The fourth frame saw Wachsmann plate a pair with a two-run double to right-center.
St. John's countered with three in the fourth, then took the lead with two runs in the fifth. Jon LeGrande delivered the big blow, lacing a two-run single through the right side with two down in the fourth.
The Bluejays pulled even with as McHugh earned an RBI on a fielder's choice as he beat a relay through to first that would have resulted in an inning-ending double play.
Creighton surged ahead with a run in the eighth as Ben North singled, stole second and a pair of hit batters later in the frame loaded the bags. Lew Rice paid off the chance with a sacrifice fly to right.
Closer Matt Goldenbaum came on to induce a double play on one pitch in the seventh, then worked out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth to preserve the win (4-1) with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, while Red Storm reliever Nick Romer took the loss (1-1). Romer allowed one run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning.
The Bluejays return to action on Tuesday, May 5 as Creighton hosts No. 11 Kansas at 6:00 pm in Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
