SPRINGFIELD, Mo. The seventh-ranked Creighton men's soccer team suffered its second defeat in as many games with a 1-0 loss at Southwest Missouri State on Sunday afternoon to conclude the regular season. Despite losing back-to-back games for the first time this season, the Bluejays still finished second in the Missouri Valley Conference point system, with 18 points and a 6-3-0 conference record, finishing 12-4-0 overall. However, due to a cancelled match in the league on Friday, CU may not be the No. 2 seed heading into the State Farm MVC Tournament.
Chris Deal of the Bears (11-5-2, 4-4-1 MVC) scored the lone goal of the match in the 25th minute of play, when he was able to beat CU goalkeeper Andrew Brown. The Bluejays were held without a goal for just the second time this season, also opening Valley play with a 1-0 loss to 17th-ranked SMU.
The Bluejays were out-shot 21-17 in the match, but did log eight shots in the second half, to six by the Bears. Jarod Tarver put three shots on goal for the Jays, but could not get the ball past Lance Parker in the loss. Brown made four saves for CU, Parker stopped five shots for the Bears.
Due to the cancellation of the Bradley-SMU match in Peoria, Ill., on Friday night, the final league standings will not be clear until the MVC Championships Committee determines the pairings late Sunday or Monday. BU finished with a higher winning percentage in MVC play than CU, but the Jays finished with a higher point total, the usual standard for seeding. Regardless of the seed, the Bluejays will host the first round of the MVC Tournament next weekend at Morrison Stadium on campus. The Jays and their to-be-determined foe will kickoff at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 5. The winner will advance to the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 12, which will also be hosted by Creighton.
CU and Morrison Stadium will play host to the semifinals and championship match of the 2004 State Farm MVC Men's Soccer Championship on Nov. 12 and 14. The semifinals will be played at 5 and 7:30 p.m. on the 12th. The championship match will be televised live from Morrison Stadium on Fox Sports Net at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 14. For ticket information contact the Creighton ticket office at 402-280-JAYS.
