OMAHA, Neb. ? Kama Bennah's header in the 81st minute off a corner kick from Vince Odorisio served as the game-winning goal and the 16th-ranked Creighton men's soccer team defeated Wisconsin, 2-1, Friday night at the Creighton Soccer Field in the 14th annual Ameritas Classic. The Bluejays improve to 4-1-0 on the season, dropping the Badgers to 2-3-0.
The Bluejay offense never appeared in sync on Friday night, despite out-shooting the Badgers 13-6. CU took an early lead when Tim Bohnenkamp's corner kick bent around the Wisconsin goalkeeper and into the net for the freshman's first collegiate goal. The rookie from Omaha Millard South put CU up 1-0 at the 6:56 mark.
Wisconsin knotted the game at 1-1 when Nick Van Sicklen took a nice through pass from Jed Hohlbein and put his shot past a diving Andrew Brown into the lower left of the CU net in the 22nd minute.
Bennah's second goal of the season came at the 80:02 mark after both team's battled through a sloppy second half. The CU senior found himself un-marked in the middle of the Badger box and headed in a perfectly placed corner from Odorisio.
“It was a night where we didn't pass the ball well and where our player's work ethic just took over to will a win,” Head Coach Bob Warming said after the win. “We decided that we'd try to pressure them and we didn't give up.”
CU is now 5-2-1 all-time against Wisconsin. CU's home record is now 3-0-0 this season and the win moved the Jays' record in the Ameritas Classic to 19-5-1.
Creighton returns to action on Sunday when it plays host to Marquette. The Golden Eagles defeated Drake 2-0 on Friday night to improved to 1-3-0 on the year. CU and Marquette will kickoff at 1:00 p.m. Sunday at the Creighton Soccer Field. For ticket information call 402-280-JAYS.
