OMAHA, Neb. - The ninth-ranked Creighton men's soccer team scored three goals in the first 13 minutes of play on Saturday night as the Bluejays cruised to a 3-1 victory over Air Force (4-2-1) in front of 2,925 fans at the Creighton Soccer Field. The wins moves the Jays record to 5-0-0 at home and 6-1-0 on the season.
The Bluejays scored the first three goals of the match, with freshman Tim Bohnenkamp getting on the board first. The midfielder took a direct free kick from the top of the box and buried it in the back of the net at 3:38 for his third goal of the year and third in three games.
CU struck again just over one minute later. Freshman Joan Carvajal netted his first collegiate goal at the 4:46 minute mark. The rookie knocked a one-timer in off a header pass from Julian Nash. Vince Odorisio set up the play by lofting the ball into the box.
Jarod Tarver concluded the Bluejay scoring in the 13th minute when he scored his third goal of the season. The sophomore took a feed from Nash and snuck the ball past a diving Falcon goalkeeper at the 12:38 mark.
The Falcons tried to climb their way back into the match, scoring in the 30th minute to cut the CU lead to two. Marcus Sagastume tallied the loan goal for the Falcons at the 29:35 mark. The forward's fourth goal of the season was set up when a back pass by the Bluejays bounced off the post and went back into an empty goal area.
Air Force continued to try to fight back, launching 17 shots on the night. CU senior goalkeeper Andrew Brown was up to the challenge, stopping five shots to record his fifth win of the year.
The stands were once again full for the Bluejays as the third largest crowd in CU Soccer Field history was in attendance. CU is averaging over 2,200 fans per home match this season.
Creighton opens Missouri Valley Conference play next Friday night when they play host to 15th-ranked SMU. The Bluejays and Mustangs (5-2-0) will kickoff at approximately 7:30 p.m., following the women's game against SMS at 5 p.m.
NOTES: Carvajal's goal proves to be the sixth game-winning goal by the sixth different Bluejay this season ... the Bluejays are now 3-3-2 all-time against the Falcons ... the match was CU's final regular-season non-conference contest of the year, as CU logged six pre-conference wins for the first time since 2000.
