OMAHA, Neb. A dominating performance by the 19th-ranked Creighton men's soccer team was not rewarded with a win Saturday night, as the Bluejays (4-1-3) played to a scoreless tie with UMKC (2-4-3) in front of 2,407 fans at Morrison Stadium. The Jays out-shot the Kangaroos 27-12 in the match, but could not find the back of the net in their second straight draw.
The Bluejays appeared to have scored in the 58th minute when Joan Carvajal took a feed from Michael Kraus and tucked it in the corner past the UMKC goalkeeper, but Carvajal was whistled offside on the play. The disallowed goal was setup by a great effort from the sophomore, as he deflected an attempted clearing kick by the UMKC keeper to start the play.
A sprawling save by Kangaroo keeper, Todd Dohlman in the 76th minute again kept the Jays off the board. Jarod Tarver blasted a shot headed to the right of Dohlman, but his outstretched arms deflected the ball from a sure goal. Dohlman also stopped a Tarver header attempt with a solid save in the 68th minute.
Dohlman made 10 saves in the match, including two stops in the first overtime period on shots by Matt Wieland and Carvajal. CU had several chances in the first overtime session to put shots away, as they were given two free kicks and two throw-ins just outside the box.
CU keeper Matt Allen made three saves for the shutout.
Kraus and Tarver led the team with five shots each, while Carvajal added four shots. Tarver, Carvajal, Tim Bohnenkamp and Brian Biggerstaff each peppered Dohlman with two shots on goal.
The Jays completely dominated play, playing a vast majority of the match on the attack. The Jays out-shot the Roos 27-12, including a 10-4 advantage on goal. The 27 shots were a season-high for the Bluejays, nine more than their next highest total. CU also worked for 11 corner kicks to just three by UMKC. The second half belonged to CU, as it claimed the shots edge, 15-6, and corner kick advantage, 6-1.
The last six times the Jays have gone into overtime, the game has resulted in a tie. The last time a win or loss came from an overtime game involving CU, was a 2-1 victory over Vanderbilt on Oct. 17, 2003.
CU returns to the pitch and continues its season-long five-game home stand when it plays host to Illinois-Chicago at Morrison Stadium this Wednesday at 7 p.m.
