OMAHA, Neb. The 16th-ranked Creighton men's soccer team opened their home season with a 4-2 win over Loyola Saturday night in front of 2,728 fans at Morrison Stadium. Sophomore Danny Minutillo and junior Ryan Junge both scored a goal and added an assist while sophomore Tim Bohnenkamp dished two assists in the victory for the 2-0-1 Bluejays.
CU got on the board in the 13th minute when Byron Dacy's run on the Rambler goal was rewarded with a perfect ball placed by Bohnenkamp. Dacy found the back of the net for his second goal in as many games at the 12:44 mark. Junge started the well organized play off a free kick, getting the ball quickly to Bohnenkamp in the corner.
Junge then added his own goal off of a feed from Bohnenkamp less than four minutes later. Bohnenkamp's corner kick carried to the far side of the box where Junge leaped above the defense to head in his first goal as a Bluejay in the 17th minute.
The Ramblers (1-2-0) cut the CU lead in half in the 21st minute, and CU held its one-goal lead through halftime. Shortly after Loyola cut into the Jays' lead, Keum Sung Kim was given two yellow cards in the span of just over two minutes, leading to his ejection and allowing CU to play a man-up for the final 63 minutes.
Loyola tied the match in the 59th minute, when Matt Marek banged in a header from Lee Zarzecki.
CU answered five minutes later off a corner kick. Jarod Tarver bent a corner kick to a mass off players in the goal mouth where the ball changed directions near Minutillo, getting passed the Loyola keeper. Minutillo, a sophomore, has now scored two goals in his CU career, both serving as game-winners.
Minutillo later added his first career assist on Brian Biggerstaff's insurance goal in the 87th minute.
Sophomore Matt Allen made two saves for the Bluejays in net. Junge also cleared a ball off the line for a team save early in the first half, in addition to his three-point night.
CU dominated the physical match, out-shooting the Ramblers 18-10 and claiming a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. CU was whistled for 22 fouls, Loyola 17.
The Bluejays return to action next Friday night at Morrison Stadium in the first match of the annual Diadora Challenge. CU hosts midwest region rival Memphis at 7 p.m. at Morrison Stadium. A limited amount of men's soccer team photos will be handed out to fans in attendance.
