OMAHA, Neb. - In a match-up of the winners of the last four Missouri Valley Conference regular season titles, Creighton (7-6-1, 1-1-0) was shutout on Friday night by Drake (8-5-2, 3-0-1) 2-0 on cool and windy night at Morrison Stadium. This was only the third meeting all-time between the two teams in Omaha and the first time that Drake has played at Morrison Stadium during the regular season.
In the first half Creighton put the pressure on the Bulldogs defense outshooting Drake 7-3. Drake however caught the Jays defense sleeping with five minutes left in the half and went up 1-0 on a goal from Crystal Townley. Townley scored on a floater from 18 feet out that went over CU goalkeeper Valerie Zimmerer's head. It was the first time in two matches that the Jays had given up a first half goal.
In the second half Drake attacked the Creighton defense and pounced on the Jays mistakes. In the 57th minute Sarah Foote scored goal number 11 for the season on a miss play of the ball by Zimmerer. Foote booted the ball through the open net giving Drake the 2-0 lead. Creighton had not given up a second half goal in seven matches before Drake's second score.
'Drake was well prepared and they outplayed us,' said head coach Bruce Erickson. 'We had our moments but never got in a rhythm, and conceding the second goal was hard for us. We will be ready to play on Sunday.'
Creighton continues with MVC play on Sunday when the Jays travel to Springfield, Mo. to take on the Missouri State Bears. Game time is set for a 1:00 p.m. kick-off. MSU is 9-6-1 overall and 2-2-0 in conference. Missouri State leads the series with Creighton, 4-3-2 and Creighton is 1-1-2 in its last four matches versus MSU.
