TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Katie Brennan scored the game-winner in the 47th minute to lead the Creighton women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory against Indiana State Friday afternoon.
Creighton moves to 8-6-2 overall and 2-1-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play with the win, while Indiana State drops to 7-8-0 and 2-3-0 in the MVC. The win is the ninth win in a row for the Jays against Indiana State.
Indiana State struck first in the first half when Lauren Podolski sent a pass to a streaking Sarah Whitely. Whitley was able to get the ball past CU goalkeeper Valerie Zimmerer and the Sycamores were up 1-0 in the 24th minute. Creighton struck back 13 minutes later when Lindsay Vaught scored on a cross from Gretta Arvesen. Vaught caught the ball while it was still in the air to blast it past the Indiana State goalkeeper. This was Vaught's second goal in as many games. The Jays and Sycamores were tied at one a piece going into half time.
It didn't take Creighton long to take the lead in the second half, Emily Munn's pass off of a corner found Brennan for what would eventually be the game winner. It was Brennan's third game-winning shot of the year.
The game was tight for the next 43 minutes until Arvesen scored her first goal of the season to make the score 3-1 in the 88th minute. Marcy Gans found an open Arvesen and Indiana State goalkeeper Rachel Rudzis overplayed the ball, giving Arvesen the open net.
"I thought our performance today was a definite improvement in that we were able to create chances and score three goals," said head coach Bruce Erickson. "Indiana State gave us all we could handle especially getting the first goal and forcing us to chase the game a bit. Gretta had a great game assisting on the equalizer and scoring the third goal of the match."
Creighton returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 22 against Evansville. This will be the final regular season match for the six Bluejay seniors. This is also the first senior class to have played all four years inside of Morrison Stadium. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
