KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The nationally-ranked Creighton men's soccer team continued its hot play with a 3-1 victory over UMKC (4-12-1) Tuesday afternoon in a match played on the Rockhurst University pitch. Creighton's fifth straight victory moves its unbeaten streak to eight matches and pushes its record to 11-3-3 on the season. All three Bluejay scores came from seniors, playing in the final regular-season week of their careers.
Senior Ryan Junge got the scoring started for the Bluejays in the 29th minute. The goal came from a corner kick taken by junior Pietari Holopainen, sent into the box, where senior Tony Odorisio flicked the ball onto Junge. Junge found the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
The Jays, ranked as high as 15th by Soccer America this week, used tremendous ball control in a build up leading to their second tally. It ended as Kansas City native Seth Sinovic fed senior Michael Kraus at 55:14 for the score. Kraus now tops the team with five goals and four game-winners.
A well worked combination between Tim Walters and senior Jarod Tarver set up the Bluejays' final goal. Walters sent the ball to a streaking Tarver from about 35 yards out, and Tarver slid the ball past the UMKC goalkeeper from about 12 yards for his second goal of the season in the 62nd minute.
UMKC would add a goal in the 67th minute, but it was too little, too late for the Kangaroos, snapping their three-game winning streak.
"It's good to see our team really coming into form at this point in the season," said head coach Bob Warming after the win. "We had some beautiful goals and a lot of good chances. I thought we really had some of our best attacking play of the year today."
Matt Allen (76:12) and Nathan Gibson (13:48) combined for the win in goal, with Allen stopping two shots and Gibson stopping one.
The Jays will conclude the regular-season at Bradley on Saturday. CU has already clinched at least a share of the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title, as the only remaining unbeaten team in the league at 4-0-1. A win or tie with Bradley (7-7-3, 3-1-1 MVC) would give the Jays the regular-season title out-right and earn them the top seed heading into next week's State Farm MVC Tournament. Kickoff in Peoria is set for 7 p.m.
