OMAHA, Neb. - For the fifth time in seven matches this season, the Creighton men's soccer team played extra time, and for the second time this year the match ended in a draw for the Bluejays. Creighton (3-2-2) extended its unbeaten streak to five matches as it tied Oregon State 2-2 Friday night as part of the 10th annual Diadora Challenge in gusty wind conditions (steady at 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph) at Morrison Stadium. CU remains unbeaten (14-0-4) all-time in the event.
The Bluejays scored the game's first goal late in the first half when senior Michael Kraus was pulled down from behind inside the 18-yard box on a breakaway opportunity. Kraus was awarded a penalty kick and converted for his third goal in as many games in the 44th minute.
Oregon State (4-2-1) was then awarded a penalty kick in the 56th minute, with all-Pac 10 forward Robbie Findley converting the chance for the Beavers. The goal snapped CU's scoreless streak at 422 minutes and 44 seconds.
Just 39 seconds passed before the Bluejays regained their one-goal advantage. Junior Tony Schmitz headed in a long throw in from Ryan Junge in the 57th minute, for his first goal of the season.
Bryan Jordan scored the equalizer for OSU in the 79th minute for his third goal of the year. Jordan knocked in a header off a generous free kick awarded to Lucas Egenwall.
The Bluejays appeared to have scored the game-winning goal with just under 90 seconds to play in regulation when Tony Odorisio redirected another Junge throw-in. A foul whistled on the Jays disallowed the score and kept the game knotted, sending it to overtime.
"I'm proud of how our team played in difficult weather conditions tonight," commented head coach Bob Warming after the draw. "I thought Oregon State had about three real chances to score and converted two of them. I feel confident that we were the better team tonight. We had a lot of dangerous chances, but were just unlucky at times."
Junge missed an open look at the OSU net in the first half, while two attempts in the second overtime could have won the match for CU. A header directed on goal by Byron Dacy was stopped in the first minute of the second OT, while Jeff Thayer had a clear shot at the goal but sent his attempt sailing over the net in the 107th minute.
Matt Allen made eight saves for CU in goal, while OSU keeper Packy Deenihan stopped seven Bluejay shots.
Yale and Drake tied 1-1 in Des Moines, Iowa in the other Diadora Challenge match Friday night. OSU and Drake will face off Sunday at 10 a.m. at Morrison Stadium, followed by Creighton-Yale at 1 p.m. The Bluejays' match will be televised live in Nebraska on NET and NET-HD and shown tape-delayed nation-wide on CSTV next Tuesday and Wednesday.
