RIVERSIDE, Calif.- The Jays rebounded from their loss on Friday night to knock off UC-Riverside Sunday afternoon in overtime 2-1. This was the very first meeting between the two 2005 NCAA Tournament participants in their program's histories. Creighton's victory over UC-Riverside snaps UCR's five match winning streak.
Freshman Kyla Hoskins scored the match winner off of a rebound shot from fellow freshman Jordan Bruch. Hoskins picked up the rebound and made another shot attempt. It was blocked by UCR's goalkeeper, Tawny Poggo. Hoskins reacted first to the rebound and poked the ball through the net.
Creighton (4-4-1) took the lead in the 20th minute when Emily Munn directed a corner kick through the net. The Highlanders (5-2-0) tied up the match in the 36th minute when Letty Villalpando scored the first goal of her career and they entered the half tied up at one a piece.
The Highlanders went on the attack in the second period but CU goalkeeper Valerie Zimmerer, who received the win and improved her record to 2-0, had some timely saves. She denied Tessa Lennala a goal in the opening minutes of the second period. Lennala had another shot to tie up the match in the 81st minute but her shot went high. Zimmerer had five saves in the match.
Creighton out shot the Highlanders 24-12 and had four shots in the overtime period. UCR goalkeeper Poggo had 10 saves for the match. It was the Jays first win in an overtime match this season.
The Bluejays host the Bluejay Classic next weekend, Sept. 22 and Sept. 24 at Morrison Stadium. They meet Grambling State on Friday, Sept. 22 at 7:00 p.m. and face UNLV on Sept. 24 at 1:30 p.m.
