NORMAL, Ill. ? Illinois State's Yvonne Northover scored two second-half goals to lead the Redbirds to a 2-1 victory over the Creighton women's soccer team Sunday afternoon in Missouri Valley Conference action. Junior Marcy Gans scored in the 86th minute, but it wasn't enough as the Bluejays fell to 6-6-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the MVC. The first-place Redbirds improved to 7-4-1 overall and 3-0-0 in conference play.
The teams played to a scoreless first half, but Illinois State held the edge offensively as they out-shot the Jays, 10-2, in the first period. Creighton goalkeeper Kristen Casey kept the Redbirds off the scoreboard with four first-half saves.
Northover broke the scoreless tie in the 72nd minute as she found the back of the net from eight yards out. Only 3:17 later, Northover scored again when she sent a shot from the left that bounced off of Casey's hands, hit the crossbar, and went in for a goal.
Gans pulled Creighton within a goal at the 85:09 mark, as she took a pass over the top of the defense from sophomore Eden Hingwing for a breakaway. Gans then beat Illinois State goalkeeper Katie Grill-Donovan for her team-leading sixth goal of the season. The goal, however, was too little, too late for the Jays.
Illinois State out-shot the Jays, 22-9, and held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. Casey kept the match within reach for Creighton, picking up a career-high nine saves. Grill-Donovan made five stops for the Redbirds.
Creighton was led offensively by Gans and sophomore Shawn Magrum, who each had two shots on goal in the match. Northover and Shannon Duggan each had four shots on goal for the Redbirds.
“We were flat from the get-go,” said head coach Bruce Erickson. “We played better in the final six minutes, but until then we were uninspired. We have to be better than that.”
Creighton will return to Omaha for two matches next weekend, beginning with an MVC tilt against Indiana State on Friday, Oct. 19 at Morrison Stadium.
