OMAHA, Neb. After Tara Oltman pitched a three-hit shutout in game one of Thursday's doubleheader against North Dakota State at the CU Sports Complex, the Bison returned the favor in the night cap. Bekki Rasmussen (4-3) recorded a three-hit shutout in a 3-0 win for NDSU (16-11) over the Creighton (14-5) softball team in nine innings, as she out-dueled Bluejay starter Amanda Hess (5-3) who pitched 8.1 innings giving up two earned runs on nine hits while striking out seven, as the teams battled through eight scoreless innings.
In the top of the ninth, the Bison took the lead on a Lynnae Foshag RBI bunt with one out that brought home Allison Bakke from third. Foshag's game-winning hit took place after Melissa Chmielewski led off the frame with a single to left center that moved Bakke over to third. Chmielewski, who advanced to third on Foshag's hit, was brought in on an RBI single then to center field by right fielder Erin Troup to give NDSU a 2-0 cushion.
The Bison would add another run following Hess being relieved by Oltman for the final two thirds of the inning, as a wild pitch allowed Foshag to score from third. Oltman recovered to finish the game retiring the only batter she would face, as she relieved Hess who had allowed no runs on six hits in the first eight innings.
Recording hits for the Jays in game two were Jamie Reiss, Mary Egan and Renae Sinkler, as Rasmussen finished the complete game shutout pitching nine innings giving up just three hits and striking out six.
The Bluejays will next return to action on Saturday when they head to Missouri State for an afternoon doubleheader starting at noon. The two teams will then finish their three-game set on Sunday with another first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
