FARGO, N.D. - North Dakota State scored three second-half goals in a 13-minute time span to come from behind to defeat the Creighton women's soccer team, 3-2, Friday afternoon at Ellig Sports Complex. Michelle Martinez scored the final two of NDSU's three unanswered goals to erase a 2-0 Bluejays lead.
Creighton (3-2-0) took a 1-0 lead just before halftime, in the 38th minute. Junior Lindsay Vaught fired a shot that was saved by North Dakota State goalkeeper Monica Morgan, but senior Toch Ihemelu was there to put the rebound in the back of the net. The goal was the first of the season for Ihemelu, who led the team in scoring last season.
The Bluejays out-shot NDSU, 8-2, in the first half and had the 1-0 halftime lead to show for it.
Creighton came out in the second half and continued to have offensive success. In the 48th minute, Vaught and freshman Emily Orbell were both denied goals on successive chances. However, the Jays were able to capitalize less than a minute later, when Orbell blasted a rebound from 15 yards out to give the Jays a 2-0 lead. Orbell's second goal of the season came off a deflected crossing pass from senior Sam Russell.
The Bison answered with a goal in the 63rd minute, when Candice D'Arcangeli rebounded a teammate's shot that was originally saved by Bluejay goalkeeper Kristen Casey. The goal was the first given up by Casey in over 200 minutes of action.
NDSU struck again in the 71st minute, when Michelle Martinez found the back of the net to tie the match at 2-2. Martinez struck again less than five minutes later at the 75:16 mark, when she headed in a goal off of a corner kick.
“We got up 2-0 and took our foot off the pedal and lost our composure,” said head coach Bruce Erickson. “I was pleased with how we played in the first half and to start the second, but we have to respond better than we did.”
For the match, Creighton out-shot the Bison, 16-10. Casey had fives saves in goal for the Bluejays while Morgan had two saves for North Dakota State, who improves to 4-1-0. Vaught and junior Marcy Gans led the way offensively with five shots apiece. Vaught had three of the team's six shots on goal in the match.
Creighton travels south to Brookings, S.D., for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, Sept. 16, against South Dakota State.
