BROOKINGS, S.D. -- Junior Marcy Gans scored her third game-winning goal of the season Sunday afternoon as the Creighton women's soccer team defeated South Dakota State, 2-1, at Fishback Soccer Park. Junior Lindsay Vaught added a goal as the Bluejays improved to 4-2-0 on the season.
Vaught got Creighton on the scoreboard in the 38th minute with her first goal of the season. The goal gave the Jays a 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break. Creighton out-shot the Jackrabbits, 9-4, in the first period.
Gans made it 2-0 in the 66th minute, as she took a pass from senior Heather Duncan and found the back of the net for the fourth time this season. The goal proved to be the game winner, the third of the season for Gans. The junior from Raymore, Mo., has already surpassed her career total entering the season of two game winners.
South Dakota State got on the scoreboard in the closing moments of the contest on a goal by Tory Schiltgen in the 87th minute to deny Creighton goalkeeper Kristen Casey her third shutout of the season.
Creighton out-shot the Jackrabbits, 16-11, in the match including a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal. Casey recorded a season-high six saves in goal for the Bluejays. SDSU goalkeeper Nicole Lograsso had eight saves to keep her team in the match.
Gans led the way offensively with five shots, four of which were on goal. Sophomore Eden Hingwing fired three shots (two on goal), and sophomore transfer Mary Zapapas added two shots on goal in her first start as a Bluejay.
"I was pleased with how we responded today after letting Friday's game slip away," said head coach Bruce Erickson. "Marcy (Gans) took the game over at times and it proved to be enough. I thought Mary Zapapas put in a good game for us in the midfield as well as Eden Hingwing at defender."
The Jays will return home next weekend to host a pair of matches at Morrison Stadium as part of Alumni Weekend. Creighton will face Iowa on Friday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m., and Weber State on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 12:00 noon.
