OMAHA, Neb. -- Iowa's Jackie Kaeding scored on a header from point-blank range in the 66h minute for the only goal of the game as the Hawkeyes defeated the Creighton women's soccer team, 1-0, Friday night at Morrison Stadium in front of a school-record 1,547 fans. Creighton out-shot the Hawkeyes, 13-10, and had many more serious scoring threats, but could not finish with goals. Creighton drops to 4-3-0 on the season, while Iowa improves to 3-1-3.
Creighton came out as the aggressor and held a 7-3 first-half shot advantage over the Hawkeyes. However, the Bluejays were able to put only one shot on goal, which came off the foot of defender Eden Hingwing. The Jays made a number of good runs but could not control possession long enough to put a shot on goal.
The match's lone goal came on a tough break for the Bluejays. After a foul was called just outside the box, Iowa's Alexandria Seydel sent a free kick that hit the crossbar and looked to have rolled over. However, the ball came back down into play and an opportunistic Kaeding was there to head it in from one yard out.
Iowa packed it in after the goal, and the Jays could not break through with a goal. Creighton had three corner kicks and attempted five shots after the Hawkeye goal, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Creighton junior Marcy Gans led the way with five shots, while fellow junior Nicole DeLue added two shots with one on goal. Goalkeeper Kristen Casey recorded four saves for the Jays, while Iowa's Lindsey Boldt made two stops.
"I was pleased with how we played tonight," said head coach Bruce Erickson. "We were better in all phases of the game. I thought the midfield played great tonight. However, we have to find a way to score. We have gotten the opportunities, but just haven't been able to finish."
The Alumni Weekend crowd of 1,547 tops the previous attendance record by nearly 300, set last Sept. 29 when the Jays hosted Kansas.
"We had a great crowd tonight," said Erickson, "a goal and the place would have erupted."
Creighton will remain at home for a match Sunday against Weber State, beginning at 12 noon at Morrison Stadium.
