OMAHA, Neb. - The women's soccer team lost its first game of conference play Saturday, 1-0 to Illinois State at Morrison Stadium. Creighton lost on a goal with 1.4 seconds to go in regulation.
The Redbirds' goal came after having a goal kick in its own end with 25.0 seconds to go in regulation. Jane Carlson flipped the ball to Mel Routledge who sent a desperation shot at the Creighton net, bouncing just over the head of goalkeeper Kristen Casey.
Although they didn't find the back of the net, it wasn't for a lack of opportunities for the Bluejays. Marcy Gans received a pass right in front of the Redbird net in the 81st minute, only to have her shot stopped by Illinois State goalkeeper, Sasha Reiber.
The loss was the first for Creighton at home this season, falling to 7-1-0. It was also just the second loss in the last 16 games at Morrison Stadium, where the Bluejays have gone 13-2-1 over that span.
After the game, Creighton head coach Bruce Erickson gave his thoughts on the heartbreaking loss. “I give credit to Illinois State. They outworked us, and that's not something we ever expect to happen at home.”
The loss was the first for the Bluejays in conference this season, and fourth overall, as the team dropped to 8-4-0, and 1-1-0 in the MVC.
Creighton will begin a three-game road trip next Saturday at 3 p.m., as it heads to Terre Haute, Ind. for a matchup with Indiana State.
