TEMPE, Ariz. ? A six-run top of the sixth inning for the Creighton softball team helped the Bluejays overcome a 6-1 deficit and post a 7-6 victory over Florida International Sunday morning in the Jays final game of the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational hosted by Arizona State.
The Golden Panthers (6-15) built their lead to 6-1 using the long ball. FIU hit a solo home run in the second inning to go up 1-0 and led 3-0 after a two-run shot in the fourth inning.
Creighton (12-5) got on the board in the fifth inning when Bailey Dawson's RBI single drove in Jessica Wakasugi, who had reached on a one-out bunt single.
The Panthers pushed ahead 6-1 after Kim Rodriguez smashed a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth. The blast was the second of the day for the FIU cleanup hitter.
Creighton used five hits and a pair of FIU errors in the sixth inning to come all the way back for the win. The frame started with a Michelle Graner single, followed by a walk to Emily Humpal. Cassidy Nee then strolled to the plate for her first at bat of the season, pinch-hitting for Lau Emmsley-Chang. The junior smacked a two run double to get the scoring started and cut FIU's lead in half.
After Wakasugi lined out to the pitcher, Liz McKewon reached on the first Panther error of the inning. Jessi Jadlowski then singled up the middle to drive in the third CU run of the frame. Two runs scored on a single by TJ Eadus, as she advanced all the way to third on an error by the left fielder, and the game was tied 6-6. Renae Sinkler then singled Eadus home to put the Jays up 7-6.
Tara Oltman came on in relief of CU starter Amanda Hess and picked up her second save of the season. Oltman pitched two perfect innings, striking out two for the save. Hess (3-2) got the win after allowing seven hits and six runs in five innings.
Graner was the only Bluejay with more than one hit in the game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Six different Bluejays drove in a run and seven different players scored in the win.
Creighton will remain in Arizona for the duration of their Spring Break trip, playing a single game against No. 3 Arizona State on Tuesday at noon (CST). The Jays will then play a three-game series at No. 8 Arizona on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
