OMAHA, Neb. ? Laura Kratochvil and Michelle Graner connected for home runs and Tara Oltman kept Nebraska scoreless through six innings as the Creighton softball team eased to a 7-2 victory over in-state rival Nebraska Wednesday night at the Creighton Sports Complex. The win was Creighton's seventh straight, while the Bluejays have now won 10 of their last 11 to improve to 22-10 on the season.
The Bluejay bats came to life in the bottom of the second inning. Michelle Koch roped a double to left center field with one out. Kratochvil then pinch-hit for Jessica Wakasugi. The move paid off as the junior from California took Nebraska starter Alex Hupp deep for her first home run of the season to give the Bluejays a 2-0 lead after two innings.
Nebraska (13-13) ace Molly Hill relieved Hupp to start the third inning, but didn't prove any more effective against the Bluejay offense. TJ Eadus reached base on an error by Hill to start the frame. Renae Sinkler followed by crushing the first pitch she saw back up the middle for a single to put two runners on for Graner. The sophomore left fielder sent an 0-1 offering from Hill over the left field fence for a three-run home run, her third round tripper of the season.
Up 5-0, the Bluejays added two more runs in the fourth before leaving the bases loaded. Bailey Dawson reached base on a Husker error to start the inning and moved to third on a ground-rule double by Eadus. Sinkler followed with a single through the left side of the infield to plate both runners and give the Jays a 7-0 lead. Cassidy Nee reached base on a one-out bunt single and Wakasugi found her way to first when she swung and missed at a wild pitch for strike three. But pinch-hitter Emily Humpal could not capitalize on the NU miscues and fouled out to first base to leave the bases loaded.
NU tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh inning on a bases loaded walk and a bases full ground out.
Sinkler, a Lincoln native, finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in the game, one of seven different Bluejays to cross the plate in the win. Kratochvil's and Graner's home runs accounted for the other five Bluejay RBI in the game.
Bluejay ace Oltman improved to 15-4 with the victory, as she scattered four Husker hits with no runs through six innings, before surrendering three hits and two runs in the seventh. She walked one and struck out six in her 15th win of the season.
Hupp (6-6) took the loss for Nebraska. She went two innings and allowed three hits and two runs, along with two walks and two strikeouts.
The five-run margin of victory was the largest for the Bluejays over the Huskers since topping NU 6-0 in Omaha on April 15, 1997.
Creighton returns to Missouri Valley Conference play when it hosts Northern Iowa for a three-game series this weekend at the CU Sports Complex. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for noon.
