TEMPE, Ariz. ? The Creighton softball team battled the top-ranked team in the nation for nine scoreless innings before Arizona State's Jackie Vasquez smacked a solo home run to center field to lead of the 10th inning and give the No. 1 Sun Devils a 1-0 victory over the Bluejays (12-6) Tuesday at Farrington Stadium.
Sophomore Tara Oltman went the distance against the Sun Devils (22-1), scattering seven hits. The right-hander finished with nine innings pitched, five walks ? three intentional ? and six strikeouts to drop to 7-3 on the season.
Arizona State ace pitcher Katie Burkhart silenced the Bluejay bats, allowing just one hit in 10 innings. The All-American left-hander struck out 18 Bluejays and walked none to improve to 11-1 on the year with her seventh shutout.
The Bluejays flirted with danger all day, as the Sun Devils had a base runner in each of the first seven innings, including the leadoff runner in the first, fourth, sixth and seventh innings. ASU stranded at least one runner on base in each of the first seven innings, leaving the bases loaded in the fourth. Oltman was able to work out of the bases loaded one out jam in the fourth, striking out pinch-hitter Jessica Mapes and then getting Lesley Rogers to fly out to left. ASU left two runners on base in both the third and sixth innings and hit into a double play to end the first and seventh.
Jessi Jadlowski led off the game with Creighton's only hit of the game. After her single, she moved to second base on a passed ball, but would be stranded in scoring position. Jadlowski again reached base in the third inning, advancing all the way to third on an error by Burkhart in the circle. She again would be left on base and the Jays would not have another base runner until the eighth inning.
The Jays had a few chances in extra innings, as Michelle Graner was hit by a pitch to start the eighth. She was quickly erased off the base paths by getting picked off. TJ Eadus reached base to lead off the 10th inning on an ASU error, but was left at first.
The Bluejays return to action against another nationally-ranked Pac-10 foe on Thursday. The Jays play their first of three games against No. 7 Arizona in Tucson on Thursday at 8 p.m. (CST).
