OMAHA, Neb. - Marcy Gans scored two goals in the first half en route to a Bluejay 2-0 victory in the conference opener, Sunday at Morrison Stadium. With the win, Creighton head coach Bruce Erickson has recorded 100 victories during his time as a Bluejay, becoming the first to do so.
Gans' two goals gave her 10 for the season and 33 for her career. Her 33 goals are a Bluejay record, surpassing former Bluejay great Gretta Matthews who had 32. Gans trails Matthews in the all-time points department by one, 81-80.
Gans' two goals both came in the first half just four minutes apart. Her first was in the 16th minute as she headed in an Emily Orbell corner kick, to give Creighton a 1-0 lead. Gans' second goal came in the 20th minute, as Gans put home a Jordan Bruch blocked shot, to put the Creighton advantage at 2-0.
Defensively the Bluejays were able to shut out their opponent for the fourth time this season. Senior goalkeeper Kristen Casey had six saves on the way to her 16th career shutout, and 14th at Morrison Stadium.
With the win, Creighton moved to 8-3-0 on the season, and 1-0-0 in conference play. It marks the best start under Erickson and the best start in program history time since 1998 under then head coach Ira Philson. In 1998, the team started the season 9-2-0.
After the game, Erickson gave his thoughts on 100 victories at Creighton. “That's not really something I look at. As a team we try to win every game, and by doing that, it's more of a team record.”
The win moved the Bluejays to 7-0-0 at home this season, and 13-1-1 in their last 15 home games overall.
Creighton will wrap up its four-game homestand next Saturday at 1 p.m., as it welcomes in another MVC opponent, Illinois State, to Morrison Stadium.
