TULSA, Okla. - Creighton followed its highest scoring game in nine years by scoring just one run in two losses on Sunday. The Bluejays scored 18 runs against Saint Louis on Friday, but lost 3-0 to Louisiana Monroe and 4-1 to Tulsa on Sunday to conclude play at the Tulsa Select Festival. The losses drop Creighton to 5-4 on the season.
In the opener, ULM (5-9) scored all it would need with a two-run second inning. Both runs in the frame were unearned as a result of a Bluejay error. The Warhawks added an insurance run in the sixth inning.
Meanwhile, the Bluejay offense had no trouble reaching base, stranding at least one runner each inning. CU left the bases loaded in both the fourth and sixth innings and left two runners on in the second and seventh. The Bluejays struck out 13 times in the game however, stranding 12 runners on base.
Jessica Wakasugi went 3-for-3 and Renae Sinkler was 2-for-3 to account for all of the Bluejay hits in the shutout loss to ULM.
Kylie Hovinga (1-1) pitched a complete game in the loss. The freshman left-hander allowed eight hits, one earned run, walked one and struck out two.
Tulsa opened game two with a bang as Lauren Lindsay smacked a leadoff home run to start the game and give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Hurricane added to its lead in the top of the fifth inning with another home run to lead off the frame, this time by Jessica Stoelke. Tulsa again used the long ball to add to its lead in the sixth inning, as Brooke Smart's two-run home run put the home team up 4-0.
Liz McKewon and Bailey Dawson started the seventh inning with back-to-back singles and both moved into scoring position when Michelle Koch grounded out. Sinkler followed with a double to right field, which only McKewon could score on, but would bring up two of CU's hottest hitters in Sara Loeffelholz and Laura Kratochvil. Loeffleholz fanned for the second out and Kratochvil grounded out to third to end the game.
Junior Tara Oltman (4-3) hurled a complete game in the loss. The right-hander allowed six hits and four earned runs, while walking two and striking out five.
The Bluejays actually out-hit the Hurricane, 7-6, with seven different Jays logging a hit in the game. But the TU home runs proved to be the difference.
Creighton returns to action next weekend when it returns to Oklahoma. The Jays play at the Sooner Legends Invitational, hosted by Oklahoma. CU plays Saint Louis and OU once each on Saturday and Sunday in Norman.
