OMAHA, Neb. - Sara Loeffelholz lined a three-run home run in the first inning to help the Bluejays plate four in the first frame, en route to a 5-0 Creighton softball victory over North Dakota State in the Bluejays' home opener Wednesday afternoon. Laura Kratochvil had an RBI single and solo home run in the win, while Tara Oltman carried a perfect game into the fifth inning and allowed just two hits in her fourth shutout of the season.
Bailey Dawson led off the game with a single and came around to score the game's first run on an RBI single by Kratochvil. Michelle Graner followed with a walk and Loeffelholz then connected for her third home run of the year. The junior transfer from New Mexico drove a low and outside pitch just over the right center field wall and CU was up 4-0 after one inning.
Kratochvil led off the third inning by taking an 0-2 pitch down the left field line, clearing the wall for her career-best third home run of the season.
Oltman took a perfect game into the fifth inning, but not without the help of second baseman Michelle Koch, who made a diving play on a ground ball in the hole to end the fourth inning. Oltman walked Kelly Cantrell to lead off the fifth and lose the perfect game and then surrendered a single to Richel Briones to lose the no-hitter.
The Bluejay ace finished by allowing just two singles to pick up her fourth shutout of the season and move to 9-5 on the year. She struck out seven and walked two in the win.
Kim Westendorf (1-3) took the loss for NDSU (12-11), allowing seven hits and five earned runs.
Kratochvil finished 2-for-3 with two RBI in the win. Jessica Wakasugi also went 2-for-3 in the game one victory.
