OMAHA, Neb. - Tara Oltman carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished with a one-hit shutout of Illinois State in Creighton's 1-0 win in game two of Saturday's Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader at the Creighton Sports Complex. The Bluejays (14-8, 5-0 MVC) used a Redbird (13-13, 2-3 MVC) error in the bottom of the sixth to score the only run of the game. Oltman tossed her fifth shutout of the season and has now allowed just one earned run in her last 61 innings pitched.
Nearly matching Oltman's dominance, was ISU freshman starter Jordan Birch. The rookie carried her own no-hitter into the fifth inning, before surrendering a lead off single to Sara Loeffelholz. Loeffelholz would reach third with two outs, but could not be pushed across the plate.
Bailey Dawson opened the bottom of the sixth inning with a double into the left field corner. Michelle Koch then attempted to sacrifice Dawson to third, but Birch threw the ball into the dirt and past Kaprice Williams covering first on the bunt. The ball skipped into the outfield and Dawson came around to score the game's only run on the error.
Oltman, who also hurled a complete game four-hitter in the opener, finished the blanking of ISU by setting the Redbirds down in order in the seventh. The game took just one hour and 17 minutes to complete, as Oltman threw only 86 pitches in her 11th win of the season.
On the afternoon, Oltman hurled 14 innings, struck out 14, walked one and allowed just five hits and no earned runs, to pick up both Bluejay victories in the circle.
Creighton will look for its first three-game sweep of Illinois State since 2004 when the teams play the series finale on Sunday at noon.
