OMAHA, Neb. - Renae Sinkler hit the game-winning home run in the bottom of the sixth inning and Tara Oltman tied a school record with her 76th career victory as the Creighton softball team knocked off Drake 2-1 in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader at the Creighton Sports Complex.
Drake (23-16, 8-4 MVC) took the lead in the bottom of the third, when Erin Mollohan led off the inning with a solo home run to left field. Kelsey Kahler followed with a single for the Bulldogs. Those back-to-back hits proved to be Drake's only base knocks of the game.
Creighton (24-10, 12-2 MVC) used small ball to tie the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. After the first two Bluejay hitters of the inning struck out, Michelle Graner coaxed a walk and Sara Loeffelholz singled through the left side. Pinch-hitter Cassidy Nee then worked a full-count walk to load the bases for Jessica Wakasugi. The Bluejay center fielder used her speed and good placement on a swinging bunt to score Graner with CU's first run.
The game stayed tied at 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Sinkler led off the frame with her team-leading seventh home run of the year and the 20th of her career. The first baseman is the seventh player in school history to reach 20 career round-trippers.
Oltman settled in to throw a two-hit complete game and improve to 19-7 on the season and 76-24 in her career. The junior struck out seven and walked four, as she tied Tammy Nielsen's school record with 76 career victories. Nielsen also set the school record in three seasons, while the Bluejay duo is now tied for fifth in Missouri Valley Conference history with the 76 wins, eight shy of the MVC record.
Jenna DeLong (14-7) took the loss for Drake, allowing four hits and two earned runs. The right-hander struck out 11 and walked three in defeat for DU.
