SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Creighton did not allow an earned run in a doubleheader at Missouri State's Killian Stadium Saturday afternoon, but only came away with one victory, a 3-0 shutout in the opener. An unearned run in the first inning proved to be the only run of the game in the night cap, as the Bears held off the Jays for a 1-0 win. The split puts first-place Creighton at 30-13 on the season and 16-5 in Missouri Valley Conference play, while the Bears move to 19-20 overall and 8-8 in Valley action.
The Bluejays used small ball to score three runs in the game-one win. Michelle Koch drew a one out walk and was sacrificed into scoring position by Renae Sinkler. Bailey Dawson delivered a single to center field, scoring Koch from second base with the game's first run.
The game remained 1-0 until the seventh inning, when the Jays added a pair of insurance runs. Lauren Larson singled to lead off the inning and moved up when Jessica Wakasugi reached on a bunt single. Both runners moved up a base on Jessi Jadlowski's sacrifice bunt and the bases were loaded when Liz McKewon got on via a bunt single. Koch then singled to score Larson, while Wakasugi would score on a fielder's choice off the bat of Sinkler.
Tara Oltman hurled her 10th shutout of the season for the Bluejays, allowing just four singles in the victory. The right-hander struck out six and walked one to move her career win total to 81, just three shy of the MVC record.
Creighton had six singles and four sacrifice bunts in game one.
In the night cap, both offenses struggled, managing a combined five hits in the 1-0 MSU victory.
Jenna Schwark led off game two for the Bears with the only extra-base hit of the day for either team, a double down the left field line. She moved to third on a sac bunt. Schwark would score after Jessie Smith struck out looking and Larson, CU's freshman catcher, tried to pick the runner off third base, only to see her throw sail into left field.
The Bluejays did not get their first hit of the game until Koch led off the fourth inning with a single. Koch would be stranded at second base. Larson singled in the fifth inning, only to see that runner stranded as well.
CU's best scoring opportunity off of MSU starter Lauren McGinley came in the sixth. McKewon led off with a single and moved into scoring position when MSU could not field a sac bunt by Koch, putting two runners on with no outs. Another sac by the Bluejays put two runners in scoring position with one out, only to be left on at second and third.
McGinley (10-9) allowed three hits in the shutout for the Bears, striking out five and walking none.
Oltman (24-9) hurled her second complete game of the day, allowing just two hits in the 1-0 loss. The CU ace struck out seven and walked one, as the Bluejays suffered their fourth 1-0 loss with Oltman in the circle this year (three in MVC play).
Creighton and Missouri State will play for the series win on Sunday at noon.
