AMES, Iowa - Creighton scored single tallies in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings as the Bluejays defeated Iowa State 3-1 Wednesday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader at the Southwest Athletic Complex on the ISU campus. Tara Oltman struck out a season-high 12 to pick up her 26th win of the season.
The Bluejays got into the scoring column in the top of the fourth inning when Michelle Graner led off with her third home run of the season. The CU left fielder crushed the offering from ISU starter Rachel Zabriskie deep beyond the left center field fence for her 18th career blast.
Creighton (32-14) added to its lead with a tally in the fifth inning. Michelle Koch reached on a one out error and moved to second base when Renae Sinkler singled off the left field fence. Koch would score on an RBI single down the left field line by Bailey Dawson.
Another Bluejay run crossed the plate in the sixth inning, as the Jays opened the frame with back-to-back singles from Jessica Wakasugi and Jessi Jadlowski. With the bases loaded and one out, Sinkler was hit by a pitch to push across the third CU run of the game.
Iowa State (23-28) cut into the CU lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth as Kelsey Kidwell reached base on a one-out single. The hit was ISU's second of the game, both from Kidwell. After her second stolen base of the game, Kidwell would score on a single by Bianca Lopez with two outs.
Oltman, who twice struck out the side in the win, improved to 26-10 and captured her 83rd career win to move within one of the Missouri Valley Conference record. The CU right-hander had twice struck out 11 this year, but fanned a season-high dozen in the win, while allowing just three hits, including two in the sixth.
Zabriskie (16-23) took the loss for ISU, as the starter lasted 3.1 innings and allowed three hits and one run before giving way to freshman Lauren Kennewell. The rookie allowed two runs and four hits in 3.2 innings of relief.
NOTES: Lauren Larson extended her hitting streak to six games with an infield single in the second inning ... Oltman set down the first eight hitters she faced ... Oltman struck out the side in both the first and fifth innings, while she struck out six straight ISU hitters between the fourth and sixth innings ... Oltman's complete game was her 31st in 32 starts this season ... Dawson's RBI gives her 120 in her career, one shy of Stacey Rybar for second place in school history ... Creighton had not played in Ames since 2002 and had not won at Iowa State since 2000.
