Women's Soccer Knocks Off Minnesota State, 3-1, in Exhibition
8/16/2009 8:15:00 PM | Women's Soccer
OMAHA, Neb. - Creighton unloaded 12 shots before Minnesota State could attempt its first and the Bluejay defense held the Mavericks without a shot on goal for the first 84 minutes in the Jays' 3-1 women's soccer exhibition win Sunday at Morrison Stadium.? The Jays dominated possession and play against their Division II foe in their only exhibition match of the season.? Freshman Brittney Neumann led the Jays with a goal and an assist in her Bluejay debut.
Playing three, 30-minute periods, the Bluejays opened the match with an impressive burst.? Creighton's first six shots in the match went on goal, but MSU goalkeeper turned away five and had the help of a teammate to prevent another from going across the line.? The Jays would end up out-shooting the Mavs 9-0 in the first period, but the score remained tied at zero through 30 minutes.
The Bluejay offense broke out in the second period, starting with Minnesota native Emily Orbell's goal in the 32nd minute.? Orbell took the ball from midfield and drove it down the center of the pitch before knocking her shot off the left post and into the back of the net from the top of the 18-yard box.? Ten minutes later, Neumann took a feed from Annemarie Hengel and gave the Jays a 2-0 lead.? Hengel's pass from the goal line back to Neumann perfectly set up the rookie for a one-timer in the 42nd minute.
Minnesota State was held without a shot on goal until the 84:12 mark, when Brittany Henry's shot was stopped by CU freshman Kaitie Jo Swanson.? Henry later was able to score on a header in the 87th minute.
The Jays responded to the late Maverick goal, with a goal of their own in the 88th minute.? Neumann crossed a pass to a wide open Carey Dahlquist and the sophomore tapped the ball in from close range to give the Jays a 3-1 lead.
Sophomore Alicia Montgomery split time in goal with Swanson, as both played about 45 minutes.? Montgomery played the first 30 minutes and then split the third period with Swanson.
Newcomer Andrea Zuniga impressed in her Creighton debut, as she unloaded four shots on goal in the first 12:15 of the match.? She led the Jays with six shots, four on goal in the win.
Creighton opens the regular-season with a home match against Iowa State this Friday.? The Bluejays and Cyclones kick off at Morrison Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
