ST. CHARLES, Mo. - Ally Jensen knocked down six three-pointers to score a career-high 18 points and help the Creighton women's basketball team past Drake, 65-62, in the quarterfinals of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Friday night at The Family Arena. Sam Schuett added her team-leading seventh double-double of the year with 12 points and 11 rebounds, as the Bluejays advanced to the semifinals of the tournament on Saturday at 7:35 p.m.
Drake (15-15) scored the first six points of the game, before Chevelle Herring hit a free-throw 2:53 into the game. The shot started a 7-0 run for the Bluejays, as they took their first lead of the game just over five minutes in. The Bluejays made five of their first nine shots in the half, before cooling off and making 3-of-21 to end the half. CU tried shooting over Drake's zone, with little accuracy, making only 3-of-18 (.167) three-pointers in the first 20 minutes.
The Bulldogs ended the first half on a 5-1 spurt to take a 28-24 lead into the locker room. Jensen kept the Jays in the game, as she drained 3-of-9 three-pointers in the first half, while her teammates combined to go 0-for-9 from beyond the arc in that same span. Drake out-rebounded CU 24-16 in the first half.
Drake owned a five-point lead, up 36-31, before the Jays nailed three straight three-pointers to regain the lead. Schuett knocked a triple down and then Jensen hit back-to-back threes to put the Jays up 40-36 with 13:23 left in the game. DU fought back to tie it up, only to have Jensen hit her third three in as many chances in the second half and give the Jays a 43-40 lead. CU would hold the lead from that point on, as Jensen's final three knocked DU out of its zone defense.
Creighton pushed ahead by as many as nine in the second half, leading 64-55 with 1:15 to play. The Jays missed five of their final six free-throws, including their final four in the final minute, allowing Drake to inch its way back into the game. Jordann Plummer attempted a deep three-pointer at the buzzer, as the Jays escaped with the win.
The Jays drained 8-of-15 (.533) three-pointers in the second half to go 11-for-33 (.333) in the game. The Jays ended the game shooting 40 percent (22-55) from the field, but just 10-of-18 (.556) at the free-throw line. DU out-rebounded CU 43-31.
