
Redbirds Eliminate Women's Tennis From MVC Tourney

WICHITA, Kan. - The Creighton Women's Tennis team couldn't score a first round upset Friday, as Illinois State ended the Jays' season with a 5-0 victory at the State Farm MVC Team Championships at Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
The Redbirds won the all-important doubles point by taking matches at No. 1 and 3. Julia Zubkova and Franziska Steinhardt defeated Kelsey Schmidt and Anna Kirshenbaum 8-3 at No. 1, before Hannah Esker and Carmen Peters pulled out an 8-6 win over Leesa and Sarah Cadwallader at No. 3 to put the Redbirds up 1-0. The No. 2 match was halted upon the clinching of the doubles point.
In singles, the Rebirds rattled off three straight wins at No. 1, 3 and 6 to clinch the victory. Aniko Kiss started things off with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Tes Reddin at No. 1. Zubkova topped Lauren Mastro at No. 3, 6-3, 6-1 and Esker swept Mary Pat McMullan, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6. Ariane Maack was ahead 6-0 in the No. 5 match with Lindsey Erickson, as she earned the win after Erickson retired.
Creighton finished the season 11-10, while Illinois State moves on to face Southern Illinois in the semifinals tomorrow
