OMAHA, Neb. - First-half goals from Kyle Deremer and Ethan Finlay held up for the Creighton men's soccer team as the Bluejays topped Hastings (Neb.) College 2-1 in exhibition action at Morrison Stadium Friday night. Nearly 3,000 fans turned out for the first home match in head coach Jamie Clark's tenure as the Bluejays wrapped up their exhibition slate with a pair of 2-1 wins.
The Bluejays opened scoring in the 33rd minute, capitalizing on a set piece. Sophomore transfer Jose Gomez put his free kick from 35 yards out in the perfect spot for Deremer to redirect the ball with his head into the back of the net. The senior defender has no career goals in the regular-season.
Gomez again helped set up the next Bluejay score in the 41st minute. Sergio Castillo started the scoring play, getting the ball to Gomez who played another perfectly placed ball to a streaking Finlay, who blasted a shot off the hands of the Hastings goalkeeper to give the Bluejays a 2-0 lead at the half.
The Bluejays had a few chances to go ahead by three, including a fantastic build up with 15 minutes left in the game started by Kris Clark. The midfielder sent a crossing pass to the far post where freshman Liam Kelly gave a perfect touch to Finlay, who's shot bounced off the post. Kelly appeared to have a goal himself, just 10 minutes earlier, when his only shot in the match bounced off the cross bar and out.
Hastings, the tough NAIA foe from across state, hung with the Bluejays, scoring late. Nate Polak, older brother of highly touted Bluejay freshman Tyler Polak, scored for the Broncos in the 83rd minute to cut the CU lead in half.
Creighton would snuff out one last scoring chance for the Broncos inside of one minute to play, as backup goalkeeper Bryan Hoie snagged a high crossing pass out of the air to preserve the victory for starting goalkeeper Brian Holt. Holt made four saves in the victory.
Gomez assisted both goals Friday night and finished the exhibition season with a hand in three of CU's four goals. Tyler Polak was also impressive from his defensive slot for the Bluejays in his home debut.
The Bluejays now turn their attention to the regular-season opener at Loyola Chicago on Wednesday. The Bluejays and Ramblers played to a scoreless draw in the 2009 season opener in Omaha last Sept. 1.
NOTES: Total attendance was 2,982, with better than 1,200 students at the exhibition contest – the Bluejays ranked fourth in the NCAA in attendance last year ... Creighton opens its home season against UNC Greensboro on Saturday, Sept. 4 at Morrison Stadium.
