LINCOLN, Neb. - On a windy day in the capital city, the Creighton women's soccer team showed its offensive power Sunday in a 5-0 win over Loyola Chicago. The Jays used goals from Erin Gunther, Brittney Neumann, Rachelle Holt, Macy Mauer and Lauren Cingoranelli to put away the Ramblers in the final game of the adidas Husker Classic. Goalkeeper Katie Jo Swanson got her first win of the season, as she played 90 minutes of shutout soccer. Creighton is now 2-1-1 on the season.
The Jays and Ramblers played scoreless soccer until the 38th minute of the match. Erin Gunther scored her second goal of the weekend when Emily Orbell passed a ball into the box that Gunther put in the upper right corner of the net. The Jays then got a goal from Neumann off a rebound of her own shot. It is the first goal of the season for the 2009 MVC Freshman of the Year.
"I thought we played really well and had lots of good individual performances." said head coach Bruce Erickson. "Erin Gunther might have had the best overall weekend for us, as she had the game winner in both games this weekend. But everyone was working hard to create chances - not just when we scored, but other opportunities all day."
The Jays had three shots on goal in the first half and held the Ramblers to none, although each team had four shots in the period.
In the second half, the Jays continued to overpower the Ramblers on the offensive end. Creighton scored in the 69th minute when Holt put a ball in the back of the net off a Gunther corner kick that deflected off the Loyola Chicago goalkeeper. The goal is the first goal of Holt's Bluejay career (18 matches). Mauer then scored in the 79th minute when she drove in an unassisted shot past the keeper. The final Bluejay goal of the day was from the freshman Cingoranelli. On a Gabriela Guillen assist, Cingoranelli put her first career goal past the Rambler goalkeeper on a one-on-one drive to the net.
Creighton ended the day with 11 shots against the nine from Loyola Chicago. Swanson finished the game with three saves, all coming in the second half of play. The five goals in the game is the most since a 7-0 win last October over Southern Utah.
"It was nice to get another shut out and just play well," said Erickson. "All in all, it was just a really good weekend for us."
The Jays will be back in action Friday, September 3 as they play host to Iowa State at Morrison Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Omaha, Neb.
