OGDEN, Utah - One goal was all the Bluejays needed Saturday in a 1-0 victory over the Wildcats of Weber State. Creighton's Andrea Zuniga scored her third goal of the season, also the third in two matches. The Bluejay back four along with goalkeeper Alicia Montgomery records the third shutout of the season for Creighton. The Jays are now 4-2-2 and have a two game win streak.
After the Jays had an early goal called back, Creighton scored the only goal of the match in the 22nd minute when Zuniga took a shot from the right side of the box, 25 yards out. The goal is the sixth of Zuniga's career. Creighton took 10 shots in the first half, with Zuniga taking three and Lauren Cingoranelli taking two. Montgomery had four saves in the half, while Alyson Hanson of Weber State recorded two saves in the half.
"I am very pleased with our performance today," said head coach Bruce Erickson. "It was a well earned win with many solid performances, particularly by Andrea Zuniga. To come back and get a goal after we had one called back was big."
In the second half, Creighton took seven shots, but could not find the back of the net to score another goal. Creighton ended the day with 17 shots, seven of which were on goal, and one goal. Weber State finished with seven shots, and four on goal. Montgomery picked up her first shutout in goal this year, the third for the Bluejays as a team, and had four saves on the day.
"The back four [Claire Zach, Kat Wright, Erin Gunther, and Macy Mauer] and Alicia [Montgomery] were solid in preserving the shutout and our attack generated quality chances," said Erickson. "It was a good win for us today."
The Jays are back in action next Friday when they open up a three match home stand against Wyoming. The kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Morrison Stadium.
