OMAHA, Neb. -Creighton gave the fifth largest crowd in women's soccer history quite a show, beating the Wyoming Cowgirls 6-2. It is the first victory at home for the Jays this season, who move to 5-2-2 on the year. Brittney Neumann and Erin Gunther each scored twice for the jays while Andrea Zuniga recorded a goal and an assist. Katie Jo Swanson played all 90 minutes, recording 10 saves.
The Jays scored their first goal in the 15th minute of the match when Neumann scored her third goal of the season. Neumann took a shot from 30 yards out on the right corner of the box, threading it just over the outstretched hands of Wyoming goalkeeper Courtney Merkle. Neumann took two shots in the first half, both on goal.
Gunther scored her third goal of the season in the 27th minute, when Andrea Zuniga sent a ball into the middle of the field and Gunther laced into the back of the net. Gunther recorded her second goal of the match, fourth of the season, on a penalty kick in the final seconds of the first half. After a Cowgirl was called for a penalty inside the box for pulling down Lauren Cingoranelli, Gunther blasted a ball into the upper right corner of the net.
Creighton was outshot 12-4 in the first half, but all four of their shots were on goal, while the Cowgirls had six shots on goal. Swanson had six saves on the half, while Wyoming goalkeeper Merkle had one in the half.
"I was very impressed with the chances we created tonight," said head coach Bruce Erickson. "We were very efficient with the ball and gave ourselves great scoring opportunities. Our attack really looked good at times, especially when we played our game fast."
Creighton gave up an early goal in the second half, but then answered with a Neumann goal over the outstretched hands of Meagan Burke, the Wyoming second half goalie. Neumann's goal just fell in under the cross bar, her fourth goal of the season.
The Jays scored one final time in the match when Tara Bailey took a dead ball shot from 35 yards out and placed it in the upper corner of the net. The goal is Bailey's first of the season, and third of her career. Creighton surrendered one more goal, but ran out the clock on a 6-2 home victory.
Neumann led the team with five shots, four on goal, while Gunther had two shots, both on goal. Zuniga finished with two shots, a shot on goal, a goal and an assist. Creighton had 10 shots on goal (13 shots) in the match while Wyoming took 22 shots, 12 on goal. Swanson recorded 10 saves and allowed two goals in her 90 minutes of play.
"I wasn't happy giving up some of the chances that we did tonight, but we battled to a point where we could keep control of the match," said Erickson. "It was a good win for us."
The Jays are in action again this Sunday when they take on Cal State Fullerton at Morrison Stadium. The Titans fell in action today against the Nebraska Huskers 3-1 in Lincoln. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
