
Creighton Men's Tennis Competes in MVC Individual Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Creighton men's tennis team hit the courts for the first time in the 2011 season today in the opening day of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Men's Individual Tennis Championship. Snow outside caused the players to move inside at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. Singles competition was played today with doubles competition beginning tomorrow followed by singles semifinals and consolations, and finally championship play to conclude on Sunday.
Highlighting the day was Gabe Nagy's second place finish in his pool. He will make it to the semifinals and have a chance at the Flight 5 singles title.
In Flight 1 singles, Billy Paluch fell to Timon Reichelt 6-2, 6-2 to open the day, and then fell in a tough match with Juan Diego Cuadrado of Bradley 7-5, 7-5. Reichelt earned the number one spot in the pool while Paluch played into the third seed and will play Vlad Marinescu of Wichita State in the consolation bracket.
In Flight 2 singles, Creighton's J.T. Christian fell to pool champion Alexander Pelaez of Illinois State 6-2, 6-2 in his opening match. He then was defeated in his second match to James McKie, also of Drake. Christian moves to the consolation bracket to play Hamish Weerasinghe of Bradley.
Kyle Obermeier played Flight 3 singles for the Jays, finishing 0-2 in his pool and earning the three seed for the tournament portion. Obermeier fell to Matheus Periera 6-2, 6-1 and to Brandon Florez 6-2, 6-2. He will meet up with Eric Nguyen of Bradley in the consolation bracket.
Bryan Lube, playing Flight 4 singles, fell to Filip Miljevic of Illinois State 6-1, 6-2 in the opening match and also lost to Anis Ghorbel of Drake 6-4, 6-2. He will match up with Ashton Kalhorn of Bradley in the consolation bracket tomorrow.
In Flight 5 singles, Creighton's Nagy lost to Guillermo Nicol of Wichita State but came back to defeat Carlos Do Val of Southern Illinois 6-4, 6-4. Nagy will play against Tuomas Manner, the number one seed in the pool one, in the semifinal match tomorrow.
Ryan Norman did battle in the Flight 6 singles, taking on Valentin Mihai of Wichita State and Orhan Spahic of Southern Illinois. Norman fell 6-2, 6-1 against Mihai, the eventual pool champion, and then lost a tough match with Spahic, taking the match to 7-6(7) and 7-6(3). He will face Cesar Bracho of Drake in the consolation bracket.
Creighton had two players playing in the Flight 7 singles with Lorenz Laurel falling to Ryan Drake 6-3, 6-3 in his opener and Sean Mathison falling to Sean O'Grady 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in his opener. Mathison is slated to play Jordan Snyder of Southern Illinois tomorrow.
