AMES, Iowa - Creighton logged its second shutout of the weekend with a 1-0 victory over Western Illinois Sunday morning at the Cyclone Indoor Invitational hosted by Iowa State inside the Bergstrom Indoor Facility. Sophomore Sammy Snygg and freshman Becca Changstrom combined to hurl the shutout, while Danai Martin's RBI single in the sixth provided the game's only run. The win moves the Bluejays to 4-1 after their opening weekend of play, their best five-game start since 2007.
Snygg pitched out of trouble in the first and second innings to keep the Leathernecks (0-5) from getting on the board. The sophomore right-hander worked around an error and a hit in the first inning, while the Jays cut down a runner at the plate to keep WIU from scoring in the opening frame. In the second inning, Snygg allowed a leadoff single and stranded two runners on base to keep the game scoreless.
The Bluejays threatened to score in the fourth inning when freshman Brittanee Grove smacked her second double of the weekend with two outs. Pinch-hitter Brittnie Kreiser followed with a walk to put two on with two outs for pinch-hitter Danielle Christiansen, but the freshman grounded out to first to end the threat. The Jays also had a runner gunned down at the plate to end the fifth inning, as Jennifer Bohle was cut down trying to score from first on a Liz McKewon double.
After Snygg retired the side in order in the fourth inning, she was lifted for Changstrom. The rookie righty retired the first seven hitters she faced before allowing a one-out single in the seventh.
Creighton manufactured the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. McKenna Setlik walked with one out and her pinch-runner Blair Lowe moved to second base when Brittanee Grove was hit by a pitch. Malloree Grove followed with a single that loaded the bases. The Leathernecks forced a runner out at the plate on a ball hit by Ellen Homan to present a bases-loaded, two-out situation for Martin. The sophomore right fielder came through with the game-winning single, scoring Brittanee Grove with the go-ahead run.
WIU put two runners on base in the seventh inning, but Changstrom worked her way out of the jam to pick up her third win of the weekend.
Snygg lasted four innings in the no-decision, allowing just four hits, no walks and striking out three. Changstrom improved to 3-0 in her young career, tossing three innings and allowing only one hit to go along with four strike outs.
Three of Creighton's seven hits in the game were doubles, one each from McKewon, Brittanee Grove and Christa Ruf. Ruf finished the game 2-for-3.
Creighton is off to its best start through five games since the 2007 team started the season with six straight victories.
The Bluejays take next weekend off before returning to play with five games at the UT Arlington Classic, Feb. 25-27.
