ARLINGTON, Texas - McKenna Setlik's first career home run tied the game in the sixth inning and forced extra-innings, but the Creighton softball team fell to Tulsa 2-1 in nine innings Sunday afternoon in the final game of the UT Arlington Classic. The win was Tulsa's seventh straight, as Creighton is the only opponent during that span to score a run against the Golden Hurricane.
In what developed into a pitcher's duel, the Bluejays (6-4) were able to keep keep Tulsa (10-5) off the board until the third inning, picking a runner off third base to end the first inning.
After the Bluejays stranded a pair of runners in the top of the third inning, the Golden Hurricane plated the first run of the game in the bottom half of the frame. Tulsa's Caitlin Everett reached base on a one-out single and came around to score on a double by Jill Barrett, giving Tulsa the 1-0 lead after three.
The Jays stranded a runner on base in the fourth and went 1-2-3 in the fifth inning before Setlik led off the sixth inning with her first collegiate home run to tie the game.
Tulsa went quietly in the sixth inning and the Bluejays put a runner in scoring position in the top of the seventh, but were unable to push across the go-ahead run. Becca Changstrom retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh and the game went to extra innings.
Using the international tie-break rule, the Jays started the eighth inning with a runner at second base in the person of pinch-runner MaKenzie Michael. Michael moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt, but was picked off and the Jays' scoring chance was erased.
In the Tulsa half of the eighth inning, their runner at second base moved to third on a passed ball with no outs, forcing head coach Brent Vigness to call for consecutive intentional walks to load the bases and set up the force out at home. With no outs, Changstrom forced a fielder's choice in which the lead runner was forced out at the plate. She then notched a strike out and induced a fly ball to escape the bases loaded no-out jam.
After Creighton failed to convert its chance in the ninth inning, Tulsa was able to bring home the winning run, as pinch-hitter Haley Henshaw smacked a two-out single to bring in the game-winning run.
Changstrom (3-2) went the distance for the Jays, allowing one earned run in 8.2 innings of work. The freshman right-hander allowed only five hits, walked three and struck out eight in the loss.
Setlik finished 2-for-3 to account for two of Creighton's five hits in the game.
Aimee Creger (5-1) struck out 15 Bluejays in the complete game effort for Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane have won seven straight games, posting five shutouts to go along with a 5-3 win over CU on Friday and the 2-1 nine-inning effort on Sunday.
Creighton returns to the diamond next weekend when it begins its Spring Break trip in Arizona. The Bluejays play a pair of games at the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational hosted by Arizona State on Friday, facing Northern Colorado and New Mexico State.
